Rotogravure PrintingRotogravure printing was first discovered in the 19th century. However, it did not grow in popularity until the early 20th century when newspapers adopted the process. What made rotogravure printing different from other printing styles was the newfound ability to print halftone colors in high quality for a relatively inexpensive price.
Unlike the early letter press that used raised printing (meaning the characters protruded from the plate, picked up ink, and essentially stamped the paper, leaving an impression of the characters), rotogravure printing featured metal plates that were etched or indented with the characters. In 1852, the first photographic image was produced using this method. Twenty-seven years later, cylinders made of copper replaced the plates and rotogravure printing as we know it today was born.
Rotogravure printing is still used to today in large, commercial projects such as postcards and magazines. High-volume projects benefit most from this process as the per-page cost can be expensive. However, the quality of rotogravure printing is exceptional, proven by the fact that the process has withstood the test of time, even in today's digital age.
